FAQs

THE FOLLOWING PAGE exists to provide answers to the most commonly asked questions about our Universities and colleges finder pages.

What information can I find on the profile pages?

HERO's Universities and colleges finder pages allow you to search for information on UK universities and colleges that offer higher education courses. (A separate listing of FE colleges is also maintained.)

Each institution has a profile page which gives key contact details and other useful information. Most profile pages are maintained by contacts at the individual university or college.

You can search for institutions by:

or you can use our A to Z listings or clickable maps.

Why don't you include detailed course information?

WE PROVIDE A link through to detailed course information on each university or college website direct from every profile page on HERO.

There are also a number of sites that offer complete listings of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

You can a listing of undergraduate courses on the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website here.

The listing is searchable by keyword, subject or UCAS course code.

The Education UK website (produced by the British Council) also publishes a complete UK undergraduate course database which is searchable by keyword, type of attendance or location.  You can find it here.

The Higher Education Careers Services Unit (CSU) publishes the Graduate Prospects Postgraduate database of postgraduate taught courses and research opportunities.

The database is searchable by institution, subject or keyword. You can find it here.

Who maintains the university and college profiles?

PROFILE pages are generally maintained by individuals at the relevant institution using HERO's Content Management System (CMS).

If you work at a UK university or college and would like details of how you can update your profile page using any web browser, simply e-mail support@hero.ac.uk for more details.

The details entered into the HERO Content Management System are used to form the basis of the profile on the HERO and Aimhigher websites.

Changes made on the HERO CMS appear on the live HERO site within 30 minutes and on Aimhigher within 24 hours.

HERO staff also regularly check the profile pages on both HERO and Aimhigher for accuracy.

How can I ensure my institution is listed on the HERO site?

FOR THE PURPOSES of inclusion on HERO/Aimhigher, a higher education institution (HEI) is generally both:

A “recognised body”

Able to award degrees in its own right and listed here.

Publicly funded

Funded by the relevant higher education funding body and listed as a ‘supported institution’ by HEFCE, HEFCW, SFC, DELNI

This category generally includes ‘universities’ and ‘university colleges’.

For the purposes of inclusion on HERO/Aimhigher, a further education college offering HE courses (FEC) is generally both:

A “listed body”

Able to award degrees in its own right and listed here.

Publicly funded

Funded by the relevant higher education funding body and listed as a ‘supported institution’ by HEFCE, HEFCW, SFC, DELNI

This category generally includes ‘further education colleges offering higher education courses’ through a partnership agreement with a recognised degree-awarding institution.

In general, providers not funded by the UK’s higher education funding bodies are not eligible for listing.

Please note inclusion on the DIUS listing of education and training providers alone is not sufficient for inclusion.

We regularly check for new institutions conforming to our policy. If your institution meets our criteria but isn’t listed, you should forward on the institution name, address and public-facing phone and fax numbers to support@hero.ac.uk and we will forward on details of how you can update this page using the HERO Content Management System.

We are currently undertaking a review of our university and college profile pages to ensure that they conform with this policy. There may be instances where universities and colleges are currently listed but do not conform but these will be amended in the coming months.

Can you supply institution contact details in spreadsheet form?

UNFORTUNATELY HERO cannot supply contact details for universities and colleges in spreadsheet or database form.

Universities & Colleges listings are only stored using our bespoke Content Management System (CMS) to allow contacts at institutions to edit and publish the information on the HERO and Aimhigher websites.

Although we frequently get asked to provide data as a spreadsheet or database maintaining this alongside these listings would, unfortunately, be too time consuming and the information would quickly become out-of-date.

The higher education funding councils, the Higher Education Statistics Agency or the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) may be able to provide this kind of data.
