UCAS conventions and HE fairs

Crowd in a HE fair / UCAS convention
Education conventions are popular events for potential students

EDUCATION CONVENTIONS and higher education or career fairs are a good way of finding out more about going to university or college.

UCAS conventions and HE fairs

UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, run a series of over 50 higher education conventions across the UK.

These are designed mainly for 16 and 17 year old students (Year 12, Lower Sixth or Scottish Higher students in Scotland).

The major conventions are organised by UCAS Media in conjunction with universities, Connexions and Careers Service and HELOA (the Higher Education Liaison Officers Association). The regional conventions are organised by Connexions, Careers Services, universities and HELOA.

Last year, nearly 225,000 people attended the events which bring together universities, colleges and a range of other organisations (such as student travel firms, student support services, gap year organisations and Connexions) under one roof.

Conventions are held between March and July in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and between August and October in Scotland and attendance is free of charge.

At each event students are invited to talk to staff and students from a range of universities and colleges and pick up a copy of relevant prospectuses and leaflets.

You can turn up as an individual or book as a group, though tickets are not necessary. Details can be found on the UCAS site here.

You can view this year's events calendar on the UCAS site here.

HE and career fairs

While the UCAS Education Conventions are arguably the most well-known events aimed at potential students there are a range of other events held nationally and locally organised by a range of organisations.

The JobServe Live! (previously Job Scene UK) events bring together a range of employers and careers guidance professionals under one roof and take place in venues across the UK. An events diary can be found on the JobServe Live! website here.

Findagap.com run The Gap Year Show bringing together a wide range of organisations offering projects, placements and jobs. Visit Findagap.com or Gapyearshow.com for more details.

Details of other events are added to HERO across the year and will be advertised in trade, local or national press at the relevant times.
