Distance learning

THE GROWTH of the internet has enabled many people (from both the UK and around the world) to study with UK universities and colleges through distance learning.

Many institutions provide online university classes & courses. For example, Open University courses can be studied entirely through distance learning.

This usually means learning at home or work, with no need to visit a learning centre (although some institutions may expect you to attend for examinations).

Distance learning courses are available at many levels, including degree and postgraduate qualifications.

The International Centre for Distance Learning (ICDL) publishes a database of UK courses and programmes taught by distance learning. The database contains over 5,000 learning opportunities from more than 300 providers.

Before applying for an online course, please make sure that the institution is recognised by the relevant UK authorities. We have full details of which providers offer recognised UK degrees.

For further information see the pages on open, flexible and distance learning on Support4Learning.
