Archive offers something to Splink! about

Road sign
Beware - Splinking children ahead!

IF WE were to mention the word "Splink!" what springs to mind?

a) The latest artificial sweetener – all the taste, fewer calories;

b) The process of speaking while blinking – try it!

or

c) A seminal, if somewhat silly, public information film from 1976 in which Jon Pertwee attempts to explain the road safety Green Cross Code to some ice-cream eating kids.

If you guessed c) you have a great memory, but chances are you still have no clue when it comes do deciphering the mnemonic. (The BBC tried to decipher it a few years' ago if you’re at a loss!)

The Splink! campaign, of course, was just one of many public information films that you may remember appearing just before the national anthem when BBC one would close down for the evening. You don't remember that? I guess we really are getting old then...

If you did miss out the first time round then the National Archives with some help from the British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC) have compiled a selection of the best from the 1940s through to 2006. You can now view them at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/films.

So, if you want to find out just how dangerous sneezing can be, how much money you were allowed to take out of the country back in 1949, what Joe and Petunia would advise you to do if you see someone doing a special wavey dance in the sea, and how a ginger cat called Charley spawned a hit dance anthem, you know where to click.
