CONFERENCES AND SEMINARS are an important part of the knowledge transfer process and it pays to be aware of the events taking place.
There are two types of research-based conference, although the two often overlap: academic research conferences and the conferences of professional bodies.
Academic research conferences provide an open forum where the top researchers in a particular field come together, present their latest findings, and debate the issues surrounding their subject. Companies in attendance gain unprecedented access to top-level research and can keep abreast of the latest developments. There is also a valuable chance to make personal contact with those researchers working in your area of interest.
Conferences vary in both size and scope. Some are extremely focused whilst others are more general in their agenda. They can last a day or run for a full week. It is therefore important to plan a conference visit and to find out what is being presented before you go.
The Intute service has consolidated a number of online resource databases including the Social Science Grapevine, the Humbul Humanities Hub, BIOME, EEVL and PSIgate.
A number of Intute hubs now exist in relevant subject areas with each hub featuring a page profiling upcoming events and conferences.
Many professional institutes and learned societies hold regular conferences or meetings, which may be of interest to businesses which share their concerns. These are usually open to non-members.
In addition, higher education associations and professional staff organisations hold regular conferences and workshops to discuss and disseminate information on higher education policies and practices.
